So don't be scared, Though yesterday no one cared. The lake. What was once a large expansion of water and life was now just a dried up, dirt hole. Nothing more. The summer sun shone itself, blazing wildly within the barren sky, torturing those down upon the earth's surface. It was barely possible for any living creature to live in these conditions, but some did. The canines of the Vexis pack thrived here where no others could. Among these canines was Yogi, the golden German Shepherd mix.
The female wandered aimlessly across the dense ground, her raw, flesh colored paws treading lightly upon the hot sand and dirt. It hurt to walk here, it felt as if she was burning like a piece of meat in a large cooking pan. She padded forward into what was once a wet place full of cool water to drink, her paws barely touching the earth for fear of the searing pain that would well up into her paws and through her legs if she stood still for too long. Her tail swished lightly and her tongue lolled out lazily from the side of her mouth, her breath coming in short, controlled gasps as she panted to catch her breath in this weather. It was the worst time of the year to be a long-haired breed. Either way, she found herself lumbering forward, onward to nowhere. The mutt could have walked around the entire world and not known it, the only thoughts that crossed her mind were ideas of moving forward, never looking back, for, there was something... no, someone that she had left and forgotten. Why? She had no idea but the mongrel figured that if he or she was worth leaving and forgetting about, they weren't worth remembering. How wrong she was.
If only she had known it was her only brother, the one who had taken care of her when they had arrived at this hell-hole of a city, she would have known better than to just forget. But, she didn't remember, not even in the slightest.
Growing ever more tired and out of breath Yogi settled down in a spot next to a pile of bones. Being the canine that she was she did not know the significance of bones or what they were on the earth for. She smiled at them, her mind wandering and forming hallucinations from the intense heat she was enduring. A smile wavered on her face as she looked at the white things lying amongst the rubbish of the land. Her tail wagged lightly as she spoke in a friendly tone. "Hi there. I'm Yogi." Her tongue was hanging out from the side of her mouth as she leaned into the bones of the long past aquatic life and continued, almost in a whisper, "What are you?" The question wasn't necessarily asking what these things were, for, Yogi could see them with her own eyes and knew what they were. What she was really asking was who they were. The mutt did not comprehend that she was talking to something that had lain dormant for years, dead.
None the less, she was friendly and sat up, awaiting a reply from the lifeless objects.

The summer sun burned down on Cannon like nothing he had ever known. This summer was particularly hot as he marched down across the lake bed, aimlessly looking for a place of shade. not that it was likely, but one could still hope.
Amber eyes looked high into the sky as if looking for something, and perhaps he was. But all that he found was a blaze that spread like fire in his mind. Cannon knew there was no escaping this and like the good soldier he was, he took his orders and kept moving. There was no use in dieing here. Not when Archeron had finally called order among the Vexis dogs. Yes, cannon believed that this wolf had the key to bringing them salvation and perhaps a cure. but if not a cure, at least a peaceful death that was as comfortable as he could make it. Surrounded by those who actually cared.
The large bones of a deer or a buffalo that had wandered to the lake bed and met it's end in the heat lay half buried in the cracked earth and sand. Cannon saw the figure for what it was and what it little shade it could provide. But it was shade none the less. He settles his smaller body into the rib cage, gnawing on the hindquarters that were exposed, hoping that there was some nutrients left in them. sharp teeth cracked open the bones and found the dried remains of marrow. Ecstatic, Cannon gnawed harder and became lost in his focus. Only the voice of another suddenly broke him out of it.
"Hi there. I'm Yogi. What are you?"
|
the female asked, though Cannon was pretty sure that she wasn't talking to him. he raised his eyebrow at her and pulled to his feet, nudging her gently with his paw from a safe distance, being careful in case she was going so snap at him. "Hey hun. Why don't you crawl into that rib cage there. It will give you some shade. Make you cool off." He said, looking at her. He grabbed a piece of bone he had broken off but had not yet eaten. "You could use this more than I could. he said quietly, placing it in front of the dog and awaiting her reaction. So don't be scared, Though yesterday no one cared. The German Shepherd's bushy tail swished in the sand and dry dirt of the earth that lay beneath her body, still waiting patiently for an answer from the fish bones that lie in front of her. Her tongue hung lazily from its perch within her mouth as she panted in short gasps, trying to keep her breath in this raspy air surrounding her. She scooted forward on her belly, using her front legs to pull her closer to the inanimate objects as if encouraging them to speak to her. Her mind was focused, or, at least, as focused as was possible for this particular mongrel when all of a sudden she felt a slight pressure from behind.
Someone had been with her, someone who had also found their way into this dry, desolate place she had been forced to call a home for the time being. This place was no proper home, no. A home was a place with a master, someone to take care of you, and love you. This deserted place was no home.
Startled by the slight nudge induced by the paw of the stranger canine, Yogi spun around, in a crouched position, and yelped from surprise. She had not expected to see another being in this place. After her slight episode she spun around to face her new found friend (?) A smile splattered itself upon her surprised expressions, covering her features with a friendly atmosphere. She was as she usually was, prior to the startled experience she had harbored moments before she now appeared to have never felt that emotion or surprise with her newly found expressions of kindness and friendliness. Her tail began to wag lightly as the new companion spoke.
"Hey hun. Why don't you crawl into that rib cage there. It will give you some shade. Make you cool off."
A foolish grin spread across her muzzle at his offer. 'Shade would be nice,' she thought. She nodded her large, square head lightly in comprehension of what he had told her, a practice she had learned from her brother to show him that she really knew what he was telling her. 'Argos always said I was smart,' she thought proudly to herself.
"You could use this more than I could," the canine continued, placing a small piece of broken bone in front of her.
Yogi tilted her head, a bit confused by this. She had seen bones before but did not know of them as having any purpose but being the hard things that hurt her teeth when her older brother would bring her small kills such as rabbits or mice. None the less, she smiled in thanks. With that she stood to her feet, pulling herself to her full height and looking down at the shorter canine. 'He had seemed so much bigger before,' she thought.
Without really thinking about how her words would be taken she blurted out the words "You're small!" in a surprised tone of voice. Her head tilted as she looked down at the dark-furred fox, a look of pure confusion across her face. 'He had been the same size as me and now he's small!' This single thought raced through her mind time and time again. 'How can this sort of change happen so quickly?' She didn't know.
Just as suddenly as this outburst began it ended and she looked over her companion with her soft, brown eyes and her smile spreading lightly over her face once again. "Hi there. I'm Yogi. What are you?"
They're getting your place prepared, Where you want to be. Keep your dream alive, Dreaming is still how the strong survive, Once upon a time in the city.

"The name is Cannon..."
|
the fox said slowly, not really sure what to make of this larger canine. he knew that she was sick and he did his best to be gentle with her. it seemed the infection had taken her mind and Cannon understood that. Sooner or later, he too would fall to it as well. It was only a matter of time and Cannon knew that his mind was slipping already. Hallucinations had already started to come and go and the black fox knew what it meant. He was already 5 years old and far past his life expectancy. His coat had begun to gray and his eye sight was not what is used to be. Cannon had no delusions over this and he had long accepted his fate. As he looked at Yogi he saw an innocence that he had long lost. He could not break her spirit and decided to keep the knowledge of his short time left from her. He decided to help this dog as much as he could and be a kind to her as possible. He chuckled at the exclamation of his small size as he was well aware of how very small he was compared to her and her Shepard blood. "I'm a fox. A Red Fox though I'm not red. I'm black." Cannon replied to Yogi. "That there is some kind deer or buffalo. Or what's left of one anyway. The bones are really good. You should chew on it." The gentle smile of Yogi softened some hardness inside of Cannon that he didn't even know was there. Perhaps it was the loneliness of his brother, Sai's absence, or perhaps it was the fact that maybe now he wouldn't die alone. So don't be scared, Though yesterday no one cared. "The name is Cannon..."
the fox replied. "Hi Cannon!" Yogi said excitedly, testing out his name. It fit, at least, that was her perspective on the matter. Names always seemed to fit their carriers to her, but then, what would happen if they didn't? Could someone really live their whole life wandering around with a false name? The mutt giggled at the thought, her tail wagging back and forth violently with joy and excitement. "I'm a fox. A Red Fox though I'm not red. I'm black."Yogi nodded in agreement, it made sense. He wasn't red, he was black, what more was there to get? "Yes," she agreed, nodding her head up and down so fast that she made herself dizzy. The mongrel could barely hold herself up while her brain seemed to be bouncing around in her head, she plopped over into the dirt. The collapsing heap of fur caused a small dust cloud to form around her. Yogi watched the wind carry the dirt molecules all around as she lie on her side upon the hot earth. She smiled sheepishly and rolled back over onto her front, looking at her new friend. 'What?' He was her size again! How could this fox keep changing his size. Yogi felt so confused by this, he had been her size, then he had been small, now he was her size again? It was all a bumbled mess but she managed to keep her mouth shut as he continued talking. "That there is some kind deer or buffalo. Or what's left of one anyway. The bones are really good. You should chew on it."'I should?' she thought. 'Well, if he says so.' Lowering her head over to the bone she pulled it closer, using her teeth and jaws and began chewing on it, not necessarily biting down on it but chewing the edges. It was good. She glanced up at Cannon as she lay on the ground, never taking her mouth away from the bone, and smiled delightedly. Questioningly, she lifted her head and looked the little, black fox in the eyes. "Cannon, are we friends?"[/blockquote] They're getting your place prepared, Where you want to be. Keep your dream alive, Dreaming is still how the strong survive, Once upon a time in the city. A tenderness chocked Cannon up and he forced back tears. He had never known the comfort of friendship in his long life. "Yes Yogi...we're friends..."
|
Cannon said softly and he nuzzled the big dog. If felt as if there was a hole in his chest that had never realized before. Something about this dog made him feel again and it was painful. He had gone so long without an emotion that it was foreign to him. He knew he could not keep the inevitable from Yogi and he sat down in front of her with a bowed head. "Yogi...I have to tell you something and this isn't easy...I'm very old Yogi...and I'm not going to be here very much longer...I'm sick and old...Do you understand...? Cannon said softly, looking into the big, expressive eyes. He could only pray that this would not harm her. He prayed that his selfishness would not harm this innocent soul. He could only pray. So don't be scared, Though yesterday no one cared. "Yogi...I have to tell you something and this isn't easy...I'm very old Yogi...and I'm not going to be here very much longer...I'm sick and old...Do you understand...?
Yogi listened attentively, nodding slightly to show she was paying attention to his words. Slowly, her nodding turned to a motion symbolizing the word "no". She didn't understand, never before had she met anyone who would have taught her about this part of the life's cycle. Argos, her brother, had once tried to explain how life moved in a never-ending cycle, like a circle. To Yogi, this meant it had no end, for, if life was like a circle it would just continue on and on and on.
The mutt inched forward, using only her front paws but leaving her hind legs to just drag and stretch out in the dirt. "Why won't you be here?" she asked, confused by Cannon's talk of leaving. Her head tilted to the right a bit and her eyes grew large with confusion. "Are you leaving?" her voice was sad and lonely. The mongrel felt distant from everyone whenever she wasn't with someone. She rolled over onto her side, her pink tongue hanging from the edge of her mouth as she panted from the intense heat. It hadn't bothered her, not like how it was when she first came across this lake bed, since she had found someone to talk to, to communicate with. Her face grew bright with her new idea. "Can I go, too?" she asked excitedly, her tail thumping against the hard earth that lay below her massive body.
"I like you Cannon. You're nice," she added, sweetly.

Cannon licked Yogi's muzzle gently. "No, Yogi...you can't come with me...Where I'm going, is no place for a beautiful young thing with so much life ahead of her."
|
The sadness in the fae's voice brought pain to Cannon. He lay next to her and spoke as if he were speaking to his brother. He spoke gently and carefully, catering to the soft heart and tender soul. "Let me tell you a story, Yogi, that my father told me...." Cannon said, looking up into the sky as the sun set. "Life is like the sun itself...When the sun rises, it brings with it new life, and when it sets, it brings with it the end of a day, and the end of a life. he explained as he closed his eyes and comforted himself in the presence of Yogi. "And when the sun sets, the stars above look over those who are left." A pain in his chest swelled and gripped at his very being. He knew he had to hold on for her. She had to understand. She had to know that even though he was a stranger, her knew he would look down on her from where ever he was and protect her. She had to know. So don't be scared, Though yesterday no one cared. A strong look of disappointment crossed Yogi's face as she listened to Cannon's answer to her question about going with him. "No, Yogi...you can't come with me...Where I'm going, is no place for a beautiful young thing with so much life ahead of her."
She whimpered, for she did not want her newly found friend to leave her all by herself, alone out here where she wasn't even sure where she was. The mutt was like a lost puppy, endlessly searching for a place to call her home. Her life had been cruel to her, but she had accepted it with a large smile plastered across her maw. The female had never known any better. "But-" she started. Nothing, she had nothing more to say, no words were planted in her mind for her to object to him. A sadness grew in her eyes in replacement of the missing vocals. Her expressions would show what she could not find herself to say out loud. "Let me tell you a story, Yogi, that my father told me...." The fox's voice was gentle and soft; pleasant to hear. 'Story time!' Yogi thought, shifting her weight for her to lay comfortably as he told her what was on his mind. The German Shepherd had always loved stories, long stories, short stories, action stories, happy stories, but never sad stories. This one she wasn't so sure about what to think of it. Her head tilted slightly as she listened carefully to his words. As Cannon mentioned the sun Yogi shifted her gaze over to the large orb that was now setting itself behind the earth's horizon. She smiled approvingly, harboring pride at her comprehension, but she still maintained her attention towards the small canine, her ears pointed in his direction as he continued on about the setting sun. "...And the end of a life." "The end of a life?" Yogi questioned, immediately clamping her jaws shut. An apology gleamed upon her features for interrupting. She knew better than to cut in when someone was trying to talk or tell a story. "And when the sun sets, the stars above look over those who are left." Yogi's gaze shifted over the sky, looking into its darkening colors and the faintest signs of light dwelling up in that high up place that lingered above the earth. Her tail thumped lightly, bringing up small puffs of dust. The air was growing cooler from the setting sun, no longer able to blaze over them, heating the earth. She looked back over at her companion and nodded in agreement. The stars did appear to look over all of those still on the lands. Her mind ran in circles, as if cogs were meshing within, she tried to think through every line of his story and come to some sort of conclusion as to what this had to do with him leaving. 'Leaving? She had nearly forgotten that conversation they had held only awhile ago. Her face looked strained as she concentrated. "I think-" she started, trying to match up her words into what she wanted to say, "I under-stand?" Her brain hurt as she forced out the words as he mind had tried to fit together the pieces. She wasn't sure, but for some reason her thoughts were telling her Cannon was going to leave, but wouldn't return. [/blockquote] They're getting your place prepared, Where you want to be. As the sun set, Cannon looked into the sky, where his thoughts took him, no one will know.
"They will always watch over you...and so will I. I promise you that. You'll never be alone again...not really."

Silence filled the small fox as he lay by Yogi's side. He closed his eyes and let the peace flow over him. The earth seemed to cool around him and the scorching heat and crippling pain were gone. As the darkness took Cannon, he wished that his brother was near and swore he could feel him. He felt the disease slip away and he was young again. There was soft grass beneath his feet and cool air running through his coat. All was well he he took his last breath. Then the sun belched upon me You were no longer here Lyin' in your place was my hammer and my gear So I stamped out the fire that kept us both warm The ashes were fallin' Like the snow drops of old We came to a mountain Dynamite and she'll blow A big hole in that rock Like the one in my soul

So don't be scared, Though yesterday no one cared. "They will always watch over you...and so will I. I promise you that. You'll never be alone again...not really."
The fox grew silent after saying these words. He had closed his eyes and appeared peaceful, as if a light blanket of sleep had enveloped over him. Yogi hardly seemed to notice until it dawned on her that he had stopped speaking. With a light whimper she nudged at Cannon's shoulder using her dark-furred muzzle. "Are you asleep?" she asked quietly as to not disturb him if he was in fact under the light entrance of slumber.
With the lack of a reply she lay her head down on her paws, next to her friend. Her eyelids began to grow heavy as sleep drizzled upon her. Her vision was growing blurry from how tired she was. She let out a deep, long sigh before turning her head towards Cannon and falling asleep.
After a few hours had passed and the lights of the stars still lit up the sky, the large mutt climbed to her feet, awakened for no apparent reason and wandered away. She had stayed with him through most of the night, but it seemed clear to her that the fox had no intention of getting up once again.
The mongrel knew, in the depths of her mind, that she would never be able to forget the friendship she had formed with the red fox who wasn't red.
