Thick belly hung from the black Great Dane. For this Commander of the Rigormortis pack, the time for her pups had nearly come. She had carried the tiny lives for 9 long weeks and Riley grew weary. It had been some days since she had seen her mate, Cody and the fae was worried for him. It was not like him to be gone from her side for so long, particularly not now. Riley sighed and continued moving towards the clearing where she had chosen her pups to be born. She knew it was only a matter of waiting now.
Another wave of muscle spasms forced Riley to stop from her already slow, waddling pace and close her eyes. She panted softly, staying as still as possible, feeling the kick of one of the pups. They had been restless as of late and the expecting mother knew that this was not going to be a quick birth. This was her first litter but she had attended to others who had been pregnant and she knew the ropes and signs.
When the spasms stopped, Riley pushed on through the underbrush and into the clearing where the warm summer sun shone down. Riley all but collapsed in the long grasses as another spasm wracked her body. She let out a Dane's version of a howl in frustration and slight pain as the muscles pushed and contracted. Yes, this was going to be a long day.

 Cody headed into the Forest. his ears were pricked, acoustics alert for any signs of movement that might come to them. his warm jaundice colored eyes were locked a head of him. his soft fur blew in the gentle breeze that wafted through there. His nose detected that a female had come through here. he eagerly followed the scent and came upon a black great dane.
it took him a moment to realize it was Riley. he happily headed up to her and let his long bushy tail wave behind him in greeting.
"Hey riley whats up? what are you doing out here?" he asked her eagerly waiting for a response from her.
She was a lovely dog and he liked her a lot. the forest wasn't exactly his place to go but it was interesting nonetheless. He watched her closely. His lower jaw dropped, salmon pink tongue lolling out and resting over his bottom teeth as he panted slightly. it was hot now the summer had finally rolled in and the heatwave that was here was horrible. thankfully, there was plenty to eat and drink here otherwise, they would be in serious trouble. |

Dark, expressive eyes looked up at the Shepard that stood above her. Brown and white fur told her it was Cody and a wash of relief came over her. She never thought she could be so happy to see anyone, but she was happy to see him. She knew he couldn't do much to help but his prescience reassured her. The doubt that was in her mind was gone now. she felt ready to have these pups.
When Cody asked her what was going on, she seemed a little confused. Surly he knew what had come of their....adventure. The thought nearly made her freeze. Thoughts of her being alone to raise the pups raced through her mind but she immediately squished them down. Cody would never do that. He had a heart, and a good one at that.
Answering his question in the only way she knew how, between muscle contractions she spoke, her voice strained. "I'm having our pups, Cody."

Cody looked at her amazed. He gently padded over to her and laid down next to her. He gently nuzzled her and rested his chin on top of her body.
"Pups? I've never been a dad before" he said wistfully as he watched in amazement at Riley. It was an amazing scene and he never witnessed something like that before. It was a miracle.
"I think we're going to be good parents," he said softly to her giving the side of her face a gentle lick. He waited patiently for the process to be over and really couldn't think of anything else to say now. She would have to do this on her own and he couldn't help in anyway or shape or form. Female dogs were amazing to him. He watched her lovingly and waited to see how many pups they were going to have. |

The hours passed and Riley kept on pushing. The sun beat down through the leaves and finally the brilliant orb moved behind the trees and finally set. The world darkened and still no pups had come into the world on this day. With the reassurance of Cody beside her, she kept up her efforts.
With another push, the first of their pups greeted the world with tiny yips. The white and black pup who looked so much like his mother was tiny in comparison and was his sister who followed. In the end, five pups were born. 3 boys and 2 girls took their first breath in the loving embrace of their mother and father.
After cleaning the pups thoroughly, Riley nuzzled them to her teats to suckle before moving her attentions to Cody with an affectionate nuzzle and a soft lick on his muzzle. It was so amazing to think that they had brought these lives into the world together. "We did it Cody....we did it..."
